Chairman Dr. John Vanston is an internationally-renowned consultant, educator, and author in the fields of technology forecasting, technology/market integration, and technology management in uncertain environments. He founded Technology Futures, Inc. (TFI) in 1978, and served as its president for 14 years, building the Austin, Texas-based company into a leader in the technology forecasting, planning, and management fields. During his career, Dr. Vanston has managed multimillion-dollar high-tech R&D projects, fashioned a computer-based program for planning and managing complex research activities, and developed a formal system for promoting and targeting innovation activities. He is the primary architect of Five Views of the Future, TFI's signature strategic analysis framework for improving inputs to the strategic planning process, and of Technology Advantage Management, TFI's comprehensive framework for strategy development from opportunity identification to product commercialization. During his career at TFI, Dr. Vanston has conducted research, consulting, and education projects for a wide range of commercial, government, and academic organizations, including, among many others, 3M, Chevron, Kodak, Hughes Space and Communications, the National Security Agency, the National Imagery and Mapping Agency, and Rice University. He is currently conducting a series of technology forecasts for the Texas State Technical College System in a number of emerging technologies, including nanotechnology, fuel cell technology, and technologies associated with Homeland Security.
LAWRENCE K. VANSTON, Ph.D. [PDF] President Dr. Lawrence Vanston is an internationally recognized authority in the use of technology forecasting in the telecommunications industry. As president of Technology Futures, Inc., Dr. Vanston has been monitoring, analyzing, and forecasting telecom technologies and services for more than 20 years. His research reports and forecasts are used and referenced extensively by telecom managers and professionals worldwide. As an expert on the impacts of new technologies and markets on the public telephone network, he is frequently called upon to testify before state and federal regulatory commissions. Since 1985, Dr. Vanston has been the director and principal author of a number of ongoing reports commissioned by the Telecommunications Technology Forecasting Group (TTFG), which is comprised of AT&T, Bell Canada, Qwest, and Verizon. Topics have included Internet access requirements, xDSL technologies, ATM switching, fiber optics, video services, and wireless communications. Many of the TTFG reports have drawn widespread industry attention. The September 21, 1998 issue of The Wall Street Journal featured an in-depth interview entitled "Consultant's Call: Lawrence Vanston Makes Some Pretty Bold Predictions for the Future of Telecommunications. He Has Been Right Before." Notably, the predictions therein have likewise come true.
